The Bedford Hills Free Library is located at 26 Main Street, Bedford Hills, NY 10507 in Westchester County.
From Bedford Hills Free Library: "The Bedford Hills Free Library was first opened by Mrs. Eliza Gourlie above a local hardware store and has been serving the people of Bedford Hills since 1915. Later the library moved to the Bedford Hills Community House, using what is now their Audubon Room.
The present building, built in 1860, was acquired in 1952. On the second floor two apartments were constructed to help acquire funds for the library. The library was renovated in 1960 and the two apartments eliminated to provide more space for the growing needs of the library. Mary C. Hyatt, served as library director from 1947 to 1974. In 1974 the new children's room was opened and named in her honor. The library continues to change as technology enhances the use of our collections.
The library receives partial funding from the Town of Bedford, and otherwise relies on the generosity of patrons and community members. It is staffed by six full and part-time librarians, most of whom live, or have lived, in Bedford Hills and two of whom have worked for the Bedford Hills Free Library for more than 30 years.
The smallest of Bedford’s three libraries, we consider the Bedford Hills library to be one of the jewels of our small hamlet, where our librarians know their patrons and their needs.
"Keep kids reading! A note from Miss Vicki, Children's Librarian"
The Children's Room is a bright and welcoming place to enjoy the latest in children's books. There is nothing quite like finding a comfortable spot to enjoy reading or listening to a story whether at home or in the library.
Physical books have an important place right alongside the fast paced world of changing technology. As you turn each page there is a keen awareness in feeling the weight and smoothness of the paper (one just can't get that holding onto an electronic device) while enjoying beautiful illustrations. However, one can enjoy and learn from both and we now have an iPad for children to use in the library as well.
